Nishikori into Barcelona Final

nishikori

Another fantastic performance from the World’s No. 5 Kei Nishikori after winning against Slovakia’s Martin Klizan with 6-1, 6-2 scores on Saturday. Kei is now a step closer and finally got a spot to his Barcelona title. Indeed Kei Nishikori has the best hands of any player since Andre Agassi. No doubt, fans are getting more excited with the kind of moves and tactics Kei is showing on this match. To tell the truth, Nishikori is too much for Klizan. Even if the opponent is doing his best to catch the rhythm, Kei knows how to play the game. He is very difficult to beat! He don’t panic which only shows what a real champion should be.

He started the opening set with a bang and wowed the audience with his excellent moves in twenty eight minutes. Klizan took the risk by going back and forth duel but Nishikori gave his great serve, delicate drop shot and wrapped it up to Sunday’s final and will try to win his 2nd Straight Barcelona title tomorrow against the winner of the all-Spanish clash between David Ferrer and Pablo Andujar.

Well done Kei Nishikori! Barcelona title is waiting for you. You can do it!

The Ultimate Cheat Sheet On Monte Carlo Field

tennis-nadal-djokovic_3213277

The whole world is excited for the opening of the clay season this Sunday. With the result of the draw yesterday, the world’s two best clay court players, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are back at work in Monte Carlo and might face off in the semifinals. Aside from them, there are 16 awesome players of Top 20 in the Emirates ATP Rankings in the draw, how about that! For sure this will be the match of the year. Raise your hand if you are thrilled!

Djokovic who lived in Monaco is very happy to play because he spends most of his time here when not in any competitions. Guess what?! He just walk or ride a bike to the tennis court. For Novak this will be a great start to the season. “It takes time to adjust as any other switch from different surfaces. I think the key point is movement, to really get your muscles used to harder, more demanding physical work.”

For first quarters, the players to watch out for are Tsonga and Almagro. Nadal should practice harder and be more motivated for second quarter. Who are your picks for the third, fourth and semi?

This is going to be exciting. Who’s your bet?

Monte Carlo Masters begins on Sunday, April 12, 2015 Save the date!

Serena Williams wins Miami Opener

Tennis: Miami Open-Williams v Niculescu

Tennis world number one player Serena Williams is pleasingly waving to the crowd on Saturday for her straight set victory against Monica Niculescu of Romania at Key Biscayne. What else can we expect from her? She did it again! She just showed how happy she is for her another success with no sign of her knee injury. If you can remember, Serena Williams withdrew at Indian Wells for semi-final because of her injury but now Serena played without a wrap on her knee. Serena said to one of the interviews that during her practice, there was a little sore but when she was in the game, she doesn’t not feel any ache nor any lingering effects. This is what you called Adrenalin rush! “Once you step out on the court you have so much adrenaline going. The adrenaline kind of kills it. So I was surprised. I felt pretty good.” Williams added.

Niculescu did the best trick and techniques with a series of entertaining rallies however she failed. It is Serena Williams’ day indeed! She controlled the game effortlessly and luckily, she got it with 6-3, 6-1 winning scores.

Serena Williams will be back on court on Sunday to face the very young 15 year old Cici Bellis.

Djokovic Reach 3rd Round at Indian Wells

Djokovic Indian wells

World number one Novak Djokovic won against the most dangerous player, Marcos Baghdatis with 6-1, 6-3 scores in a span of fifty nine minutes to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday. Novak Djokovic thought he had a solid performance because he served well and stayed aggressive in the court. Novak got the first set while Baghdatis got the first game of the second set yet still struggling. Djokovic did not give Marcos any chance to come back in the game with his précised serving.

“Great performance against a quality opponent, somebody that was a former top 10 player and knows how to play on the big stage,” Djokovic said. He also mentioned that this tournament is one of the strongest one after the Grand Slams that’s why it is hard to win twice in a row. The marvelous Novak Djokovic is our defending champion at Indian Wells and currently bidding for his 50th title. Will he make it? Or break it? Everyone is excited what’s next for Novak and his fans are so positive that everything will fall into right place.

Djokovic forwards to third round where he will play against Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain.

Murray loses to Simon in Rotterdam

Andy-Murray

Top seed twenty seven year old marvelous Andy Murray did not win over Gilles Simon and closed out a 6-4 6-2 scores in Rotterdam. This is Simon’s first win and had no troubles on serving commanding a 4-1 lead while Murray made many mistakes that resulted in losing this game. If you can remember Murray had won his last 12 matches against Simon but this time Gilles Simon upsets Andy Murray in this game undeniably as he has tons of energy to win this match. The game started in the foulest possible approach when Andy Murray tried his very best but lost his serve on the first set and still failed, same story in the second set and then in the third game it was breath-taking for all the fans as Murray battled against his worst nightmare when he pulled it back to deuce but Simon came through to take the second set 6-2 and wrap up a crushing defeat and still Simon managed to seal his fate ruthlessly.

Simon, seeded eighth, will face the Czech world number seven Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals, who was a 6-1 6-4 winner against Frenchman Gael Monfils.

2015 Australian Open – Djokovic Gives a Lesson (to us all) – By Jim McLennon of Essential Tennis Instruction

Think of a Grand Slam tennis tournament as a marathon, and perhaps to continue this analogy, think of the final match as a 5k.  For certainly, in the final, Djokovic ran 4332 meters, and Murray 4411.

djokovic-stretches-oz-2015

And more, think of the 5k interspersed with a 15 round championship bout – for with all the back and forth, tennis is about both hitting and absorbing blows from the opponent.

What I am getting at, is whether in a marathon, a 5k, or a championship bout, there often comes a moment when the winner separates him/herself from the field, and where the race/bout/tennis match concludes with the winner never in doubt.

Something about the 6-0 fifth set against Wawrinka, and the 6-0 fourth set against Murray stands out as the lesson Djokovic gives to us all – that is – tennis is less about winners and more about managing errors – tennis is about the pressure created when a player refuses to miss – and at the end of the day there is more value created in the mind of an opponent from their own errors than from the winners from the opposite end of the court.

And one more thing – the winning and losing has more to do with the second serve, than perhaps any other aspect of the game.

In the semifinals, Djokovic and Wawrinka had played to a draw after four sets, with the sets even at 7-6, 3-6 6-4 4-6.  Going into the fifth and final set we may have been expecting 12-10 or even 9-7 from matches they have had in the past.  But this 6-0 fifth set was different.  The two statistics that stand out were :

  • Winners – Novak edged Stanislas 7 to 5
  • Errors – Novak much stronger here making only 6 errors to Stans 13
  • Second serve points tells the story – Novak won 7 of 12, Stan was 0 for 9

In the finals the story was the same.  After 2 and one half hours the sets were split, Murray broke serve for a 2-0 lead in the third set – but then the wheels came off.  Murray won just one of the next 13 games.  Not from Djokovic’s winners, but more from Murray’s errors.

As regards pressure, the focal point of the match occurred with Murray serving at 3-4, 15-40.  His double fault spoke volumes about his previous matches with Novak, as well as about his suspect second serve. After dropping serve to go down, 3-5, he chucked his racket. “So many times,” he said. “How do you do it to yourself?”  The statistics for the fourth

  • Winners – Novak edged andy 8 to 5
  • Errors – Novak made only 3 unforced errors compared to 9 for Andy
  • Second serve – throughout the match Novak dominated winning 62% against Andy at 34%

The art of winning (in my opinion) is about the value of enabling errors, and what the accumulation of those errors does to the mindset of the opponent.  On that score, Pat Cash the 1987 Wimbledon champion was quoted,  “He hasn’t put up a great fight, he hasn’t. He absolutely collapsed. Sorry but you don’t put a rose tint on this. He melted down, he’s been disappointing and the bottom line is, the situation got too much.”

Novak’s lesson to Stan, to Andy, and to you and I

  • Value errors (theirs) more than winners (yours)
  • Improve your second serve – Novak’s said his has improved thanks to Boris Becker

PS – Pat Cash also offered the following, “It’s not boring to see two great players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic compete in a final. What is getting mundane is watching the same tactic in every single match of every single grand slam for the last five or six years. Nowadays they all settle down and say ‘OK, this is going to be two hours of baseline rallies.’ The guy who outlasts the other one wins. It’s taken a lot of the skill out of tennis.”

Is this becoming the state of play within our modern game?

What You Need to Know about the Triumphant and Competitive Nadal

rafael-nadal-doha

Heavy topspin forehand, lefty slice serve, superior net game and great backhand – name it and he has it! Who are we talking about? No other than the competitive and the triumphant Rafael Nadal! And today together with his old friend and partner, Juan Monaco of Argentina, they clinched the doubles title in straight sets defeating Philipp Oswald and Julian Knowle on Friday.

Rafael Nadal stated “Playing with one of my best friends on tour is always very special.” While Juan Monaco said: “It’s an amazing feeling. I’m really happy and hopefully next year I can play again with my friend.”

This is Rafael Nadal’s fourth doubles title in Doha and ninth overall. “This has made it a positive week and I am going to be better prepared for Australia after winning this,” Rafael said after the 6-3, 6-4 winning score in the final of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.

He also said that he can evolve faster with his movement by playing doubles and it helps to get the feeling of winning again. His goal is to arrive in Australia prepared and competitive and he also added “You can win, you can lose, but I am doing all the things I need to be ready for the action. It’s a big motivation to be back at my best level as quickly as possible, and that’s what I am trying to do.”

For sure his fans are all so proud and happy for his achievements. Vamos Rafa!

Djokovic Wins Year Ender

10766925

It was another piece of cake for Novak Djokovic again as he clinched the number one spot for the third time in the last four years and of course it is a remarkable one for him. His 6-2, 6-2 winning scores with Tomas Berdych made a bang in tennis world and sealed his year-end number one ranking. Djokovic mentioned that being in number one spot is the pinnacle of the sport and it was challenging and definitely a difficult one to maintain and to be on this spot, you need to be unfailingly healthy and effective. Djokovic got his trophy and US$1.92 million cheque but in point of fact this is not the way he likes to win as he feels sorry for Roger. He has been a great competitor and always gives his 101 percent when playing. “I’m not the kind of player to celebrate these wins, but I have to celebrate the whole season and this trophy is the crown on the season,” he added. He laso said “I believe everything happens for a reason. So I’m here for a reason, and I managed to finish the year as No. 1 for a reason,”

Tennis Round Survey Responses. Q & A. December 2014.

Great feedback. Thank you!
We’d like to thank everyone who took a minute to share their experience with the service so far. With close to 28,000 tennis players on the site from about 3,000 cities it helps to know what’s working and needs more work.

We’ve responded to some of your suggestions and feedback in our Q&A section at the end, to address the more popular topics. Scroll down to see them.

It was interesting to learn that 25% of players didn’t want to rate and review other players, only 40% wanted to report their match results, 30% didn’t even know we sent SMS when we delivered invites and messages (without sharing people’s phones) and another 30% didn’t know we could actually introduce them to other players.

Indeed, we can pair you up with other players. And because we need at least one of the players to be serious, so to speak, we charge a small monthly fee of $4.99 for our Premium Plan.

Oh yes – you can change your location if you move from Florida to California, or elsewhere. You can update your location in your profile.

As always, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Take a look at these responses for a sample of the current Tennis Round membership’s opinions on these topics. You’ll get an idea of where we stand as group.

Q & A Section. Feedback & Responses.

Here are some the more common questions and topics people brought up. Because survey responses are anonymous we don’t know who posted each comment. So, we’ll respond to everyone here. 1. What my main request is to make sure to match players with equal or similar ability level.

– That is our main goal and why we started the site. The player matching algorithm looks for players of similar skill level and location.

2. Once a connection is established between two players in an area, I don’t feel I need to hear from Tennis Round any more – would appreciate the ability to connect more directly with the person instead of always having to use you guys as a go-between.

– You can. Just ask the other player for their phone or email. We don’t try to block or prevent that.

3. Yes, please allow email addresses to be seen so one can email a player.

– If you want to have someone’s email you can simply ask them. People often don’t mind sharing them after they’ve established a connection. But we don’t disclose everyone’s email publicly to prevent spam and abuse, and to protect people’s privacy.

Every time you send an invite or a response through the site, we send an email and a text message to the other player. They can read it right on their phone.

4. Perhaps a listing of local competitions. I use USTA for that, but am open to non sanctioned play.

– Good idea. We’ve had a few requests for local tournaments. We’ll put it on our todo list.

5. I’ve yet to play anyone from Tennis Round! How does this work?

– It works in two basic ways. You can either find players on your own (or wait for them to find you), or you can let the Player Matching Program see who wants to play with you. When someone accepts, we’ll connect both of you by email and SMS, and with a notification on the site under Messages.

6. I would like to put a limit on how far is located my opponent.

– We already have a limit. But sure, we can look into making that customizable by users.

7. I would like an option to find tennis partners looking for regular practicing rather than match playing only.

– Actually a lot of people are looking to play socially, instead of competing. Just include that note in your invites or in your About section on your Profile. But yes, we can make that more prominent.

8. Last minute meet ups, like a hot sheet for 48 hrs to 1hr, where players can post availability for easier search. Ppl generally suck in replying, and are late.

– This is a popular request. And how we’ve wanted Tennis Round to work from the start. It also depends on critical mass and player density per location. We’re at 28,000 users now. Hopefully once we get to about 50-60K users this will become a reality.

9. I am retired and only play during working hours and week days. Need more like me.

– Please add this note to your Profile in the About Me section. There are indeed a lot of folks who are retired and prefer playing during the day. We’ll also try to see how this can be part of the matching process.

10. I find it annoying that one cannot delete old conversations.
– Word! We do, too. We’ll make it happen.

11. Was confusing to post a score. I made a mistake and was not able to correct it.

– True. It is confusing. Currently, only matches that were arranged by the automated Player Matching Program can be reported. But, we’ll also provide the ability for anyone to report match results.

12. Many player accounts are inactive and don’t respond to requests.

– Indeed. Players tend to respond only if it suits them. If it’s not the right time, or they’re already booked, they don’t. We’ll look into calculating response rates and making active players rank higher in search results.

13. Accessing the messages is a little strange – is there a way to remove the messages once the conversation and the match is over?

– Yep, we’ll add the ability to delete old conversations.

14. I connect with a name to play but then never seem to complete the agenda and actually play!

– That can happen. After a while you’ll see that you’ll have a better list of players who always respond. And those that don’t really want to play, which you’ll probably drop from your personal play list.

15. I would like to have a system where players who are available to play last minute could post it.

– Good idea. That’s our goal, too – tennis on demand.

16. I just want to be able to add that I only want to play with players of the same gender.

– Understood. We’ll do it.

17. It would be nice that I would be able to communicate to all players at the same time, not individually. An individual communication to each player, I invited to play, took a lot of my time. I am the leader of a small group of 5 players who start to play tennis at 8 am to save the rest of the day for other activities. We need a substitution sometimes. I am sure that I would be able to get more people in our group would I be able to place my call to many players in my and surrounding areas at once.

– Good idea. We’ll look into it. Last minute substitutions are pretty common.

18. Mobile website functionality is workable but could be better.

– True. We don’t have a responsive site. We’ll do it.

19. Which cities its in and which clubs in those cities.

– It’s nationwide in all 50 states. We have players from about 3,000 cities and tennis courts in over 5,000 cities. So you can use it to find courts in all major metro areas and all cities with population above 10,000 people.

20. No responses from your website. Only met one other player!!!

– That’s a bummer. How many players did you contact? If you only pinged 2-3 people and they were busy, no wonder. By contrast, we’ve had people say they couldn’t keep up with all of their matches. It’s different in different cities.

21. I signed up for this when I was in Atlanta and this site is a good idea but I don’t live in Atlanta. Can you post what city a player wants to play in?

– Yes, each player is assigned a default home court, based on their location, when they register. Users often add more than one home court. That serves as an indicator where they play. You can also search by city or ZIP code and it will show you who plays there.

22. I would like to find for players by my area 10710.

– If you search for 10710 on the Players page you’ll see results for 1,316 players. Filter by skill level and ping a few players you want to play with

23. Doubles meet ups at public parks.

– Okay! Doubles has been an ongoing request. We’ll add it to the list.

24. Meetups/events, getting to know others players, making this thing more social.

– We have one coming up in San Francisco, as we’re based here. If you’d like to help organize one in your city, please reach out to us.

25. Some players over rate themselves. Not competitive sometimes. Otherwise, great service for players like me looking to play more with more people.

– That’s a common problem. And it’s one of the reasons why we started the site in the first place – to find compatible players of similar tennis aptitude. That’s why in this survey we asked if people would like to rate other players after the match.

26. I have attempted to disable the player matching, and have not been able to do so, kinda annoying…

– Sorry, if this is hard to find. Login and go to your Profile, then under Premium Plan you can click on Cancel My Subscription.

27. This site could be more ‘senior friendly’…

– We’ll work on it. Thanks for the feedback. Please contact us with specific issues you’ve faced and we can improve them.

28. The only addition I can think of that may be useful is a doubles format of some sort.

– For sure, lots of folks have asked for doubles. We’ll do it.

29. I wish I could add additional courts.

– You got it! We’ll provide the ability to add courts.

30. It would be great if it started a comprehensive list of public courts.

– We have that already. You can filter the tennis courts search results by Public or Private on the Courts page.

31. I wish others could rate courts so I knew what they were like before I got there.

– Good idea. We’d like that, too! We’ll build it.

32. I once played in a tennis league that rated players by a formula similar to the BCS college football method. It was AWESOME. It was way more fun than a typical ladder because it was so much more accurate. I can connect you to the guy that created the math if you are interested.

– We’ve done leagues in the past. We can do it again. Sure, an introduction would be great!

33. As I’ve already communicated, I would like the gross player overratings to be corrected.

– We hear you. We’re also looking into having the community rate the players.

34. More partners on my level in my area. So far I have next to none.

– If you’re 7.0 level or in a smaller town or remote area, it might take a little bit more time. We’re adding about 1,000 new players to the site every month, but again – some cities tend to have more players than others.

35. Expand the marketing of the website so more people know about it.

– For sure, we’re working it. We realize it’s a matter of awareness and participation to make it work for everyone. If you know local tennis stores, clubs, coaches or stringers, please send them our way so we can partner up with them.

36. I believe non active players and people that do not respond to requests should be removed so the system is filled with active and interested players only. It would be great if there was a way to post on a board the desire for last minute play or to find a 4th for doubles for example.

– Agreed, on all three counts. We’re looking at calculating response rates and for each player and dropping the non-responders from the index. “Last minute play” is also on our list. Doubles, of course, is a bit more complex (as in real life), but we’ll try a few things to see what will work.

Big thanks to all! Great to have your feedback.

We focused on the negative feedback and feature requests to save time and address pain points. But we do very much appreciate all the nice comments and compliments! It means a lot to us.
