Chinese Playground tennis courts in San Francisco

This is one of the most centrally located tennis courts in San FranciscoChinese Playground has one court. It’s in the middle of China Town and fairly close to Financial District, North Beach, Russian Hill. The only disadvantage is that it’s a bit of a climb to get to it, from pretty much anyway, except maybe via Broadway.

The court itself is in fine condition. Good net. Great, even surface. And nice view of the city and the Transamerica Pyramid. There’s a kids playground below. And that’s also where the entrance to the court is, as the door from Hang Ah Alley on the main level is locked for some reason.

It’s in the middle of a few old brick buildings. That gives it a unique acoustic popping sound every time you hit the ball. Pretty special. Like the US Open, but without the microphones on the courts.

And for extra fun, your serve may be interrupted by the occasional proud stroll of a pigeon. Right through the court. They seem undisturbed by tennis balls. Or maybe attracted to them.

It’s also right next to a few Chinese Dim Sum restaurants, hole in the wall style. They inevitably send a few spectators who seem genuinely fascinated by the people hitting the ball. They can smoke cigarettes and watch the tennis players for a while. Maybe hence the sign No Smoking. You don’t see one of those too often on tennis courts.

There’s also a wooden umpire stand. Maybe they had serious tournaments here at one point.

Overall, I’d recommend playing at this court, for a special San Francisco experience. It’s one of the courts that gets assigned by default to a lot of players who sign up on the site – tennisround.com – without specifying a ZIP Code or address. Curiously, though, every time I’ve been there, it’s been available. Image

Lafayette Park tennis courts renovated by City of San Francisco

I was pleasantly surprised by the two nicely resurfaced courts at Lafayette park. The city has done a nice job. Both tennis courts have been renovated, with new surface, new nets and wind screens. I remember this place was once littered with pine needles and with cracks on the courts. But it’s great now.

Very unique place. Nice views of the city. Some wind every now and then, but the wind screens help. The lower court gets less wind. Both have benches, a nice touch. Tennis players are generally courteous and will give up the court if anyone’s waiting, after they’ve played for about an hour.

Parking can be problematic. It’s a popular residential area, parking spots get picked up quickly. Take public transit if you can.

If you walk or bike, it’s a serious hike up the hill, no matter which way you approach it (from Gough St, or Jackson St). But it’s worth it. Solid courts with a nice bounce and cool views of San Francisco.

Is He the Next Big Thing?

d0626ss

This is outrageous news to every tennis fans as Roger Federer lost the game with 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 and 7-6. Everybody was stunned seeing that Sergey Stakhovsky finally got the victory as he let all of us to see his enormous moves on a thrilling day three.  It felt like it is the end of the world for Roger’s supporters. Out of the blue but it is the reality!

Stakhovsky confesses that he is anxious while trying to strike Federer.  At the same time everyone knows how good Roger is in playing tennis so there is a lot pressure on him. He also added that he can finally say to his grandchildren that “his moves are better than Federer and that he have magic hands ha-ha”. In the present day, a lot of Sergey fans are asking is he the next big thing? Can he win his next match?

Despondently, ATP No. 3 fans were disappointed and taken aback but no one can tell what will happen after that. Federer plays without a flaw and we know he will not let this happen again so let’s see on his next match if he can wipe away this terrible moment? Can Federer still win a further Grand Slam? What do you think?

How do I get more matches?

I just talked to a friend of mine who recently joined the Tennis Round. He said the site looked great, but he didn’t get any matches.

– How many people did you invite?

– Oh, just one.

– Well, that can happen even with your regular tennis buddies, no?

– Yeah, I guess so.

Really guys – people are busy. If someone’s not in town, or has a few matches already lined up, unfortunately they might not bother responding. If you’re just starting to use the site, and haven’t played anyone from Tennis Round yet, make sure to invite more people. That’s why we allow players to send up to 20 messages per day.

You can even copy and paste the same invite to multiple players. Just make sure you put some thought into it and actually suggest a time and a place for the match. If you just click the button 10 times with the default message, it’s probably not very likely that anyone will take you seriously.

This is the default text of an invite:

Take a moment and suggest the time and place for the match.

tennis invite actual time

This way people can see you’re real, and you really have genuine intent to play. And not just clicking around the site to see what it does.

Usually if you invite 5-10 people, you’d get 2-3 matches. People are busy. Since most of the site is pretty much free to use, we get some less serious folks. And people who just sign up, often not even using their primary email, and then forget about it. So the more players you invite, the better the odds.

Rest assured, all players are real people. We’ve never added any dummy data to create fake users. But like any free service, we get the less committed folks, too. We’ll address that issue soon. Till then, just try to invite more players, not just one or two.

Lastly, if you don’t feel like pinging new people every day, you can let the site do this for you. We have a Flex League Program, which will look for players like you and email you. When we find someone who wants to play with you, we connect you by email through the site. That service is paid. There’s is monthly plan at $4.99 per month and an annual plan at $29 per month. You can register here.

If you’re already a member, you’d need to log in first, and then upgrade your plan from Basic to the Flex League Plan from your profile page.
